Not just the Lastochka: Russian Railways, together with the Sinara-Transport Machines holding company, plans to produce a prototype of its own electric train next year.

"We must give credit to our transport engineering industry. Ural Locomotives, LLC, has now begun creating a prototype, not of the Lastochka, but of a similar electric train. We have fully localized production here in Russia. We expect to receive a prototype next year," said Anatoly Khramtsov, Deputy General Director and Chief Engineer of Russian Railways, during parliamentary hearings in the Federation Council on supporting import substitution in Russian industry.

But that's not all: work is also underway on a high-speed train. Assembly is expected to begin in 2026. Although the high-speed train project was initially a joint venture with Siemens, these services have now been abandoned, and the work is being carried out independently, Khramtsov explained.

At the same time, speaking about Sapsan trains, he noted that 378 units are at risk of import substitution. "We understand that this is an import-dependent situation, and we are fully aware of this. We have created a separate enterprise for this purpose. We abandoned our joint ventures with Siemens and created our own enterprise. This enterprise directly incorporates all the divisions that were once part of Siemens, with the same staff. Any remaining warehouse stock remains ours. There is a court order. Today, we are fully operating Sapsan and Lastochka trains in the same technological format as discussed under the joint venture with Siemens," he emphasized.
